Another Winterfest Post - February 2
I look forward to next year's Winterfest and hopefully to even more new breweries in attendance.
Indy Airport and Beer
Black Swan, Plainfield, this week had TEN of their beers on tap. I gravitate toward the Scottish Ale or the Cream Stout, but I've tried all within the last week and enjoyed every sampler. From an "Amber Wheat" with great hop character and IPA loaded with American Hops, to a Tafel ('table' in German) beer which is sort of a light pils, the beers pair with delicious food. If you can handle a 10% barleywein the Roggenwein is a strong beer with a nice slight bite from the Rye ("Roggen" = rye)[in half pints] Guest beers are also on tap and in bottles
I've enjoyed the schnitzel, the ruben, the Italian beef, and the Pretzel ham sandwich
Black Swan, 2067 EAST Hadley Road, Plainfield (tip: put East in your GPS or it might give you a long tour)
3 pints has 3 of their own brews with less usual offerings. Their Izzi's IPA is an English (not American)IPA with lighter hop notes and well balanced. Yoshi's Nectar is a California Common ("steam beer") with malt but a nice slight bite to it. They rotate so I had a Blonde Wheat, American Wheat. By 1/27 they will put a Scottish on tap.
Known for Pulled Pork and local food.
3 pints Brewery, 5020 Camberidge Way, Plainfield (2 blocks from Black Swan)
Great to have good beer near the airport. Some people park and fly... some people sample beer and fly....
Three Pints Brewpub
Look what came in the mail today. Three Pints Brewpub “Now Brewing Our Own Beer”. Turns out they’ve been serving their own for 3 weeks now.
5020 Cambridge Way is an access road to the east of Ind 267 just north of I-70. You’ll see the sign if you look hard but there’s no sign on the building at all.
Open 7 days a week at 11am.
The nice new trellis makes a good biergarten or as we call it over here, an outdoor dining patio.
The brewery is the first thing you see as you walk in the door. Turn right for the bar. Enjoy.
They have a “Pints Plus Club” that costs $25 a year.
The tap list:
- Beatnik Blonde Wheat – Light American Wheat using Centennial and Columbus hops. A bit sweet. 5.1% 18 IBU

- Izzy’s IPA – English IPA the way Americans make it. 6.5% 50 IBU
- Brown – Northern-style or American Brown.
- Yoshi’s Nectar – Out right now but second batch coming up Friday. A Steam Beer. 5.2% 30 IBU.
- McClearen’s Scottish Ale – Also in between batches. 7.4% 23 IBU.

Misc News – Dec 31
Flat 12 Bierwerks opened yesterday (see that post).
Three Pints Brewpub’s tanks are plumbed and if the Feds get out there with a license they are ready to start brewing as early as next week. First up: Scottish, Light wheat, IPA, Porter, Red. Meanwhile they are having problems with local code folks over signage and an outside walk-in.
Black Swan Brewpub has 10 vessels on site and DJ is busy setting things up for a March opening.
Thr3e Wise Men has beer conditioning and Jan 10 may be Omar’s opening. Kegs for distribution to the Scotty’s Brewhouse chain are being cleaned and a massive grain silo has brought a bit of country to the Broad Ripple area.
Three Floyds has Jinx Proof Pils on tap and some in bottles. Krunk Monk 9% WeizenBock is also on tap.
Doug Osburn writes “I am in need of a Bells Beer Batch 9000. I was hoping to collect the complete six pack of a Bells Batch 6000, 7000, 8000, 9000, 10000 and 25th Anniversary. - somehow I missed the 9000 when it came out, but have all the others. If any of the other beer geeks out there have some I would be willing to pay or trade for it...(I have a couple Oskar Blues in the fridge right now.)” Doug.Osburn@MultiPkg.com
Jason wants to remind everyone that tickets for the Winterfest aren’t at brewpubs. Get them online or at Indianapolis-area Crown Liquors stores. He also wants to remind Brugge, Broad Ripple Brewpub, and Barley Island to contact him to confirm that they will be there.
Tastes:
- People’s Mr. Brown (on tap at the Black Swan) – Fine tuned to be a classic hoppy American Brown (if such a thing exists).
- Black and Tan with Bell’s Double Cream Stout and Two-Hearted – Unlayerable. Smooth dark ESB that gives character of both light and dark.
The Ram’s 999th batch will be an Imperial IPA which will go on tap in late February.
More Michigan beer: Paw Paw Brewing Company now open says the Kalamazoo Gazette. Where’s Paw Paw? Go to the Old Hat in Lawton and turn north.
While in Michigan, check out Kalamazoo Beer Week. Jan 10-14.
Time Magazine highlights Sam Calagione.
“Alabama Criminal Codes state transporting more than five gallons of alcohol is a felony offense punishable by no less than one year but no more than five years in prison.” That’s scary. article
SlashFood picks 8 beers of 2010. Your results may vary. “What makes Infinium extra-special: It's the first new beer style created under Germany's beer-purity law, the Reinheitsgebot, in more than four centuries.”
Now that “energy drinks” are somewhat regulated, Pabst comes out with Blast by Colt 45 to debut in April. Will come in strawberry, lemonade, raspberry watermelon, grape, and blueberry pomegranate.
Three Pints Brewing
Just a 5-wood from the Black Swan Brewpub on Ind 267 just north of I70. These two will be continually lumped together as a unit since they have increased the number of good beer bars in Plainfield
by to 2. Right now neither are brewing or even have vessels but the plans are there. They are both serving Indiana beers and they both are rapidly being accepted and building a local patronage.
