Beers, Cheers, and Sneers – August 16

Keep an eye out for Sierra Nevada’s “Best of Beer Camp” 12-pack boxes hitting stores this month. The Imperial Red Ale inside was developed by Muncie’s Stan Stephens (owner of the Heorot Pub) and Bob Cox at last year’s Beer Camp. Their creation was selected as one of four beers to be included in the variety pack which also includes an Oatmeal Stout (quite large for the style at 9% ABV), Imperial Pilsner, and Floral IPA. If you can’t get your hands on a box, the Imperial Red Ale will be one of 20 Sierra Nevada brews tapped at the Heorot’s “beer school” on August 24th from 6-8pm. There is no charge for the event, but potential students are asked to sign up at the pub in advance of the festivities.four_horsemen_irish_red

Congrats to Four Horsemen Brewing in South Bend for winning a bronze medal with their Irish Red in the US Open Beer Championship. The competition included more than 1650 beers judged in 65 beer style categories with Sweetwater Brewing in Atlanta winning the Grand National Champion award.

As we approach the season for Oktoberfest celebrations, word comes from Bell's that their annual Octoberfest seasonal brand will not be offered in six-packs this year. The construction and transition into their new brewhouse limited the required fermentation space, but the product will still be available on draft. In other Bell’s news, their seasonal and somewhat elusive Double IPA “The Oracle” will be tapped at 6pm tonight at Max's Place in Bloomington and at 5pm Friday at Gerst Haus in Evansville.

There may be some concerns on the horizon for fans of hard ciders. Michigan is estimating a 90% loss of their annual apple crop after the spring weather caused fruit tree buds to come out early and subsequently freeze. Indiana could also see our worst crop in over 50 years.

This week the White House admitted to operating a homebrewery that makes small batches of beer for special events. After reading just a few of the comments on the USA Today story, I’m not going to attempt a joke or even say another word about this. Take a deep breath everyone, it’s not always that freakin’ deep.

The term “craft beer” highlights the list of words and definitions added to the latest edition of Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary. Other notables include “gastropub”, “man cave”, and “sexting”. The list is rounded out with the ubiquitous “f-bomb”, which is likely utilized more frequently in the making of craft beer than its consumption.

The occasional odd/random request or announcement will hit my email, but this one was kind of a standout. In an effort to appeal to the younger audience, the folks at Roth IRA created Tom, the 25 year-old beer lover who can use their products to save enough money for a retirement skyscraper worth of beer that will provide a six-pack a day until he turns 100. I’m just guessing that most of us will need to buy a few things other than beer in retirement, but I have to applaud the effort here. It’s worth noting that the savings allocate 83 cents a beer, so you may have all you want but it probably won’t be Three Floyds.thirsty_bear

A mother bear with three cubs reportedly ripped off the wall of a cabin in Norway and proceeded to consume over 100 cans of beer stored inside. The party continued as the bears finished off the cabin’s food and smashed the beds and kitchen appliances. The owner identified the culprits based on excrement on the outside of the cabin. So the ripped open wall wasn’t your first clue?

A startup brewery going by the name of Kinky Kabin in Bangor, Wisconsin (I couldn’t make this up if I tried) seems to have embraced the idea of taking sexuality in beer marketing to the next level. I’m not one to necessarily discourage such things (let’s not talk about some of my homebrew names), but the claim that their beers are “specially formulated to lower the inhibitions of the people drinking it” seems a bit obvious. There is a way to formulate beer to lower inhibitions. Most of us just call it fermentation.

Cheers, Nathan

Evil Genius Beer Company/Four Horsemen Brewing Company - February 20

I received the following Press Release (see below) to pass along to our readers.  Also, according to Trevor Hayward of Evil Genius Beer Company, their plan is to eventually build a brewery in Pennsylvania, but they are committed to supplying both the state of Indiana and Pennsylvania.

Evil Genius Beer Company is pleased to announce the introduction of the first beer in its "EYE" series, Evil EYE PA, an American India Pale Ale.

At 6% ABV, this AIPA goes down easier than (insert dirty thought here). Brewed with two types of malts and four varieties of hops, including Australian Galaxy, pineapple, citrus, and passion fruit aromas and flavors wave through the pallet.

For those looking for a sessionable IPA, this one’s for you. Evil EYE PA pairs well with any entree, as its citrus flavors and tropical fruit aromas add a zest to any meal.

Stats:

ABV: 6%

IBU: 68

Malts: Two Row, Simpsons

Hops: Amarillo, Falconers Flight, Warrior, and Galaxy

Another Winterfest Post - February 2

Another Winterfest has come and gone and by all that I observed it was another huge success.  Beer, beer and more beer in all directions.  People, people and more people in all directions.  My focus this year was making my way through the throngs of people to the newer breweries in attendance whose beers I had not already had an opportunity to sample before this event.  I sampled beers from:  Cutters, Das Big Dawg Brewhaus, Four Horsemen Brewing Co., Against the Grain Brewery, Bulldog Brewing Co., Triton Brewing Co., Three Pints Brewing, Finch's Beer Co., Black Swan Brewpub, and Fountain Square Brewing.  I was not disappointed with any of their beers that I sampled and even went back to a few of the tables for more samples.

I look forward to next year's Winterfest and hopefully to even more new breweries in attendance.

Four Horsemen is open in South Bend

The newest brewery in Indiana is Four Horsemen in South Bend. We visited last weekend for a checkout and to grab a growler for a family reunion.

Details:
710 Fellows St. (North of Sample St. through the underpass).
574-387-5772

Open Thurs-Fri/; 4-8pm
Sat/; Noon-8pm
Sat of Notre Dame home games/; 9am-Noon
Sun: Noon-4pm

The door is not memorable but leads to a comfortable bar that can hold probably 40 people. Here they give away samples and sell pints and growlers. Chips and pretzels are available and food can be brought in or ordered from the Dew Drop Inn about a half-mile away.

In the back room, visible from the bar, the Mishawaka Brewing equipment from Elkhart has found a home under Stephen Foster's care. They also have a small SABCO system for test batches and extreme beers. The 4H range is going to get bigger and biggers.

Pale Ale:Brit style with plenty of earthy spice and a touch of noble hop skunk.
Irish Red: Dark. On the sweet side. Lingering diacytl.
Blonde: Nice and bright yet with a cream ale thick mouthfeel. Got 2 growlers of Blonde for the reunion.

12oz bottles have arrived and should be hitting the streets soon.

Ben and Sam Roule's Great Grandfather, Joseph delivered beer in downtown Chicago in 1919 and a picture of him is proudly displayed. Their Grandfather, Arthur, had a post-war beer distributorship in Michigan City and their father Robert owned Metro Beverages in South Bend. There's beer in those boys' blood. From their web site:
"During the early 90's Sam and Ben Roule (Robert's sons) started working for the company as teenagers. They both started out sweeping floors, loading trucks, picking orders and delivering beer. Over the years both Sam and Ben worked summers during high school and college. Both graduated from Indiana University. Sam being the oldest was the first son to return to the business to become a full-time sales representative. Ben later graduated from IU and went to work in sales for an Indianapolis based distributor Monarch Beverage for 2 ½ years. After leaving Monarch Beverage Ben returned to Metro in 2003 to soon become Vice President of Sales and Marketing with Sam at that point being Vice President of the company.

In June of 2009 Metro Beverages sold to Indiana Beer. After the sale of the company Robert, Sam and Ben started to discuss the idea of starting a Micro-Brewery here in South Bend. There was one thing missing….. a Master Brewer! To the Roule's luck their accountant who is a craft beer enthusiast and friend of the family was having a few beers at Lone Peak Brewing Co. in Big Sky, Montana during a ski trip and mentioned their story and idea to the owner and Master Brewer of Lone Peak Brewing Co.. The owner of the brewery told the Roule's accountant (Paul) that he just recently had a well-qualified Master Brewer apply with him that he was not able to hire. The brewery owner gave the resume to Paul and he passed it on to the Roule's. Soon after the Roule's contacted Stephen Foster the Master Brewer and began talks about starting a Micro-Brewery.

Over the next couple months the Roule's got to know Stephen and about his tremendous pedigree in the brewing world. Oh and when I say world I mean he has traveled the world. He started his career by attending "The Bavarian State Brewery Weihenstephan School of Brewing at Weihenstephan Brewing Company in Germany (the oldest Brewery in the world). Over the following years he spent time working for SABMiller in South Africa, did some distilling for a Rum Company in the Dominican Republic, worked at Nimbus Brewing Company in Arizona and did some consulting work on start-up and existing brew pubs and micro-breweries in the US.
Stephen eventually moved to South Bend and started test batching beers on a small 15 gallon SABCO brewing system in Sam's pole barn. After test batching for a few months the Roule's and Stephen soon went full speed into the start-up of Four Horsemen Brewing Company in January of 2011."

Indiana Beer News – May 2

Four Horsemen gets ink and a picture in the South Bend Tribune. Here’s some new information.

Location: Corner of Fellows and Bronson – near southeast side.
Brewer: Stephen Foster.
Opening: June. They are brewing test batches now.
Production brewery, bottling, with a tap room that seats 50 (open Thurs, Fri, Sat evenings).

Steve Hershberger tells an upbeat story about Flat 12’s impact on the neighborhood in just 4 months. blog

Tastes:

  • Sun King 1887 German-Style Alt - All the Alt-ness without the sharp middle so often associated with the style when made on this side of the pond. 6%.
  • Thr3e Wise Men Golden Zoe – Centennial American Pale. Delicious. 5.1%. The board says 82 IBU but this seems high since Golden Zoe can be followed by another Golden Zoe without an attack of bitter beer face.
  • Brugge Brasserie Bokkenrijder – Dry-hopped pale ale (American ingredients) fermented with Belgian yeast. Has a big Belgian yeast bite with more bite from the upfront bitterness. This prepares you for a spicy sweet finish. Not a Drambuie finish but think in that direction. 9%.
  • Brugge Rojato Imperial Red – Made, again, with Belgian yeast. Interesting.
  • Brugge Harvey – A blackberry wheat version of Pooka (which is a boysenberry wheat with a brett basis). Intense fruit followed quickly by sour domination.
  • Shoreline Big Bella – Bigger and sharper than I remember.
  • Figure 8 Brewing Camp 4 English Nut Brown – Robust southern brown style which tends toward an American interpretation of a dark mild at 5%.
  • Figure 8 Jumbo Love – They say Barleywine. Has lots of Old Ale character reminiscent of Wadworth Old Timer.
  • Figure 8 Devil’s Drip Tripel – Ugly, soapy apricot-colored look. Nose is all Belgian with some cinnamon and banana. Spicy on the tongue. True to style.
  • Crown Brewing Industrial Porter – Rick, thick, creamy porter with roastiness and a bit of burnt toastiness. A+
  • Crown Fade to Black – Someone had to make an Imperial Black IPA. At 9% this qualifies and is worthy. Is there no end to new styles?
  • Crown Jailhouse Bock – Chewy sweet amber bock.
  • Crown Alkoholika Blonde Dopplebock – Thick alcoholic body. Earthy in a very welcome way.
  • Crown 2010 Alkoholika – Much the same. Enjoy the nuances.
  • Crown 2010 Barrel-aged Alkoholika – A great chance to see what the barrel can do to a good beer. Everything blends with plenty of wood and bourbon mixed in. I’d guess 6-month in the barrel. Served in samplers only and only by request. Get it while it lasts.

21stSunKingSun King is now officially everywhere

Oyster-front-96x110Don’t listen when someone tells you to check out Growlers in Highland. Yes, they have 20 taps but only 2 of them are remotely interesting.

Marston’s Oyster Stout is coming to America. This is a good thing.

Indiana Beer News – April 27

Logo-FourHorsemen-SmallerThere’s another startup brewery in South Bend and here’s what Eric Strader and I have  learned.

Four Horsemen Brewing Co. is located at 710 Fellows St., owned by Sam and Ben Roule. They plan a production brewery, bottling, with a tasting room using the equipment they bought from Mishawaka Brewing a couple of weeks ago. These tanks have been moved from Elkhart already.

Distribution will be through Indiana Beer Inc., formerly Metro Beverages distributors which Sam and Ben sold a while back.
